Admissions
The admissions team at Merriam Music is responsible for guiding prospective students towards the teachers, programs, and outcomes that best match their goals, so they get to a place of satisfaction and personal reward as quickly as possible, and with lasting results.
In many senses, we’re matchmakers. The invaluable link between teacher and student is paramount to a successful and enjoyable experience here at the school, and it’s important enough to us that we’re one of the only schools in North America to have an admissions team.
We spend the time to learn about each student, what motivates them, their past experiences, their future goals, and pair them with one of our over 150 directly hired, trained, and employed teachers. The job pace can vary greatly over the course of the year, but the sense of reward is constant.
You’ll spend your time interacting with prospective students and clients in both inbound and outreach settings. A successful team member will likely have past sales experience, though the most important traits are an excitement for others’ success, internal competitiveness, and love of quickly developing interpersonal relationships.
Job Responsibilities
Our Admission Advisors are full-time employees who work at one of our two locations: Oakville & Vaughan. Every one of our advisors works in their own professional desk area, and new prospective families connect with us either by website, phone, or email. We enjoy working with our Admissions Officers on special events, ideas on how to attract new students, and new and improved ways on how to communicate the school experience.
8 hour shifts
5 days / week
Some evening & weekend hours are required
Reports directly to the School Admissions Manager
Available at our Oakville and Vaughan Ontario locations
Interacting with 5 to 20 families daily on either prospective or existing lesson issues
Admissions
The most successful candidates for this position enjoy meeting new people and quickly forming genuine connections. You’re driven to personally succeed in anything you tackle. You’ve always been good at picking up on people’s needs. And seeing team members and students succeed gives you the warm and fuzzies.
If this sounds like you, and particularly (but not exclusively) if you’ve had prior success in a sales role, we’d like to hear from you. Although we consider this as much a guidance/advisory role as anything, prior experience with sales would be highly advantageous.
Future Opportunities
Admissions Advisors enjoy a great deal of influence over their level of pay. As our team members get more successful in placing students in the school, their earning potential also increases, plus there is an opportunity to advance to either a Team Leader position, as well as add other responsibilities such as marketing or instrument sales. The opportunities and compensation is competitive with both arts and non-arts industry positions.
WORKING AT MERRIAM
Merriam Music is an equal opportunity employer that has a long track record of fostering growth for its employees, sculpting job opportunities that build upon each individual’s strengths. While other businesses may claim a similar culture, few can boast that their entire first and second management levels are made up of 10+ year employees.
Our workplace is supportive, with open-door policies with all direct managers and support for all employees when and where needed. Whether that be mentoring and coaching so that you can achieve maximum job success, or being responsive to personal needs and challenges, our employees are the strength of our business, and we treat you as such.
And finally, you’ll be heard. Ideas are welcomed and encouraged, and the best ideas are adopted regardless of who and where they come from. We all succeed when everyone is supported fairly and genuinely – and you’ll feel it from day one.
